Dr. Mary C. Herte comes from a solid Midwestern background. She was born, raised and educated in Milwaukee, the largest metropolitan city in Wisconsin. She graduated cum laude from Mount Mary College with Bachelor of science and went on to Medical School at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she was awarded her M.D. degree in 1977.
Even in medical school, a love of specialty of Plastic Surgery took hold of her. "I thought Plastic Surgery was "magic" and I wanted very much to do magic!" She apprenticed with Dr. David Dibbell at the University and received confirmation that yes...she had the basic skills and talents to pursue that love of Plastic Surgery. She changed course and chose Surgery, an un-welcoming specialty for women at that time.
As a fresh M.D., she spent her first 4 months at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, as the Plastic Surgery Department's youngest ever Research Fellow. She studied wound healing and the uses of Ultrasound, suggesting already in 1978, (before liposuction came to U.S.), that Ultrasound technology should be developed for fat removal.
She went on to her General Surgery Residency and Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A natural and intuitive surgeon, she honed her skills and developed her aesthetic sense and the creativity that serves her today in her problem solving approach to patient care.
Her background in the reconstructive surgical challenges of Plastic Surgery is extensive and goes well beyond her excellent residency training. She has a large experience in correcting facial birth defects such as cleft lip and palate, including work with children in Ecuador with Interplast. She has also been very actively involved in children's plastic surgery here in Las Vegas, serving as Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Sunrise Children's Hospital. She has also done extensive breast reconstruction surgery for women who have lost their breast through mastectomy.
Dr. Herte opened her private practice in Las Vegas in 1983 culminating in the creation of the Herte Center for Cosmetic Surgery. Her practice now focuses entirely on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery.
She has received many honors, including "Woman of Promise" from Good Housekeeping Magazine, "Woman of Distinction" from Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas, appointment as Chief of Surgery at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center (the first woman ever in this position). She was also awarded Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons, and was the first woman Plastic Surgeon in Nevada to be so honored.
The first Nevada Woman Plastic Surgeon to become board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, she is heralded as an educator, patient advocate and is an active participant in many prestigious professional organizations including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons. Ongoing study in all areas of Plastic Surgery allows her to embrace and perfect the best advances and technology in Plastic Surgery as they develop.
