Soundwaves + Liposuction = Superior Results

Everyone has heard of liposuction. The procedure, first introduced in France in the 70s, came to the U.S. in the 80s. Liposuction was developed because everyone, no matter what kind of shape they are in, has stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to changes in diet or exercise. Liposuction is a method of removing those pockets.

Problem was, the original procedure, although very effective in results, could leave the patient with a lengthy recovery period. The doctor had to move a large cannula aggressively back and forth under the skin to break loose and then suction out the fat cells.

Fortunately, over the 30 years of performing liposuction, technology and new techniques have greatly improved the procedure. Although general anesthesia is still used by Dr. Herte for safety and comfort of the patient, the new techniques have made recovery much easier.

Dr. Herte uses one of those new techniques, external ultrasound-assisted liposuction to provide great results for her patients.

What is external ultrasound-assisted liposuction?

liposuctionUltrasound was introduced into liposuction to eliminate the need for manually breaking up fat deposits, which creates additional tissue trauma. Instead, high-frequency ultrasonic fields are delivered into wetted tissue before the cannula is inserted to remove the fat. The ultrasound energy enhances the ability to extract the fat, increasing the amount removed and decreasing patient discomfort.

There are two kinds of ultrasound-assisted liposuction — internal and external. With internal ultrasound-assisted liposuction, a specialized cannula is needed to deliver the ultrasonic energy under the skin. Dr. Herte prefers the external method, where frequency waves are sent through the skin from outside. Not only does the ultrasonic energy liquefy the fat, but it also stimulates the collagen network in the dermis layer of the skin (the second layer under the epidermis) to produce new collagen in reaction to the disruption. So, this type of liposuction has a twofold benefit, reduced fat and possibly tightened skin afterwards.

Because the fat is now liquefied, Dr. Herte is also able to use a very small cannula inserted through multiple tiny incisions that may or may not require stitches. Obviously, this minimizes scarring.
